FORT KEARNEY STATE PARK RECREATION AREA
Local riding spots near and around the Kearney area include Fort Kearney State Park and Rec. area. Located Just 4 miles south east of Kearney it offers a scenic ride or hike along the old Burlington Northern rail ways. It transverses the Platte river in two spots off old railroad bridges and offers a great view of the sunrises and sunsets. See the cranes, geese, and other native wildlife on this great trail
. The trail is about 5 mile round trip from the rec park.KEARNEY HIKE & BIKE TRAIL
You may start from Cottonmill Park , at UNK west between the Cushing Center and the College of Education on the UN
K campus or at many other location located through out western Kearney. The trail follows the Kearney canal system from Cottonmill Park through Kearney and south towards the Archway monument. It crosses the canal heading south beside Yanney Park. There is a side trail that allows you to enter and enjoy the wonderful park that the Yanney family has provided for the community. A steel and wood bridge crosses the canal on the southeast side of the park and follows along side Turkey Creek and runs east along the bank to 2nd Ave. The trail continues by going under 2nd Ave. It heads south crossing Talmadge road and meandering over to Central Ave. crossing onto Archway Parkway road. Heading east on the Archway Parkway road the trail turns north for a slight distance at M Ave and crosses the road were it runs along the south side of the canal. The trail then runs between the canal and some small lakes and crosses an old railroad bridge on the way to the Archway Monument. The final phase of the trail, when finished, will connect with the Fort Kearney trail that runs to the Fort Kearney Recreational State Park and the Fort Kearney Historical State Park. Currently the trail is about 18 miles round trip starting from either the Arch or Cottonmill.Great hotels and restaurants are located directly off the interstate at 2nd Ave. and Talmadge road . All the hotels have a close access to the trail so your whole family can come and enjoy it during you stay in Kearney.
COTTONMILL
Cottonmill Park is the local mountain bikers hang out. Located 4 miles west of Kearney off highway 30. It offers not only technical riding but novice riders will find enough of a challenge to get their hearts going. From trees and single track to prairies and cow paths we have something for every one.
